Deer hit by SUV flies through windshield of semi, severely injuring driver

Buffalo County (WQOW) – A semi driver is fighting for his life after a bizarre incident over the weekend in Buffalo County.

According to the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department, a Honda CR-V was south on Highway 37 when it hit a deer. The deer was thrown into the windshield of a semi traveling north on 37.

The semi went across the road and into a marsh on the side of the road.

The crash happened at 3:23 p.m. on Saturday on Highway 37 near County Road N in the town of Alma.

The driver of the semi, Tony McCray, 37, of Whitehall was taken by ambulance to the hospital. A helicopter was requested but it could not fly because of weather conditions.

Authorities say the southbound lane of Highway 37 was closed for 4 1/2 hours and both lanes were closed for two hours.

Eau Claire Fire and Rescue was called into assist.

The sheriff’s department says McCray has life-threatening injuries. Nobody else involved was injured.
