Weather: Breezy on Wednesday with scattered showers; a wet end to the week

Wednesday will be a warmer day with temperatures climbing into the upper 60s by the mid afternoon. Scattered showers are likely in the region, but we will also see some sun with drier air flowing into the region. The wind will still be strong with gusts up to 30 miles per hour.

Widespread rain with embedded thunderstorms are likely late Thursday night through most of Friday. More than a half inch of rain is possible.

The intense surface low will move away on Wednesday night, and Thursday will be quieter with a partly cloudy sky. Highs will be in the middle to upper 60s. Then, our next system will develop and impact the Midwest late Thursday night and most of Friday. Expect widespread rain with isolated, embedded thunderstorms. More than a half inch of rain is possible in some areas, which will not help with the high and fast-moving rivers. The Chippewa River in Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire will slowly drop in the days ahead, while in Durand, the river will crest in moderate flood stage on Wednesday afternoon. An excessive amount of rain in the near and more distant future will limit drops in area river stages.

Memorial Day weekend still looks good, and we are keeping our fingers and toes crossed! Saturday will be mostly sunny with a weak surface high drifting over the region. Sunday will be partly cloudy with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, as a cold front slowly drops into the Upper Midwest. Memorial Day appears mostly sunny to partly cloudy with highs in the lower 60s.

NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s May 28th through June 1st precipitation outlook

Cooler and wetter conditions return for the middle of next week. NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s 6 to 10 day precipitation outlook, May 28th through June 1st, predicts a good chance of above average precipitation. The temperature outlook for the same time period indicates a good chance of below average temperatures, especially daily highs.
