Eau Claire Police offer tips to deter thrift sale thieves

Eau Claire (WQOW) — Soon neighborhoods will be flowing with thrift sale shoppers, and police want you to take precautions to prevent five-finger discounts.

Whether your’re having a large or small sale, police recommend you have an extra person to help you run it, so someone always has eyes on the merchandise.

If you’re selling higher priced items, they said you should keep them closer to where you are, instead of somewhere a person would easily walk off with them.

“It’s also important to walk around, greet people, make contact,” said Officer Bridget Coit of the Eau Claire Police Dept. “Make it hard for them to really get that alone time where they don’t feel like they’re being watched and [they] take advantage of something.”

Coit also told News 18 ECPD only gets a handful of theft calls during the thrift sale season.

The more information you can give them, like what the person looked like, which direction they headed, or a license plate number, the better they can help you.
