“Significant” amount of manure spills into Buffalo Co. stream

Buffalo County (WQOW) – A “significant” amount of manure spilled into an unnamed Buffalo County stream on Friday and now DNR officials are working to determine what impact it had on the water and the fish that live in it.

The DNR was notified of a manure spill at Breezy Point Farms in Buffalo County near Urne Friday around 2:30 p.m. DNR officials say a drag-line hose ruptured and released an unknown amount of liquid manure into an unnamed tributary to Little Bear Creek.

They say the entire stream was inundated with liquid manure.

DNR officials on scene say the stream was very cloudy and smelled like manure. They said they didn’t see any dead fish on Friday but fresh water amphipods may have been in distress.

Little Bear Creek is a Class-II trout stream.

On Monday, DNR water quality experts said the manure release was significant and are looking to find out what damages were done.
