Eau Claire (WQOW) – The Eau Claire Area School District will be one of the few in the nation to offer its board members a child care stipend.
School board member Eric Torres said not a lot of local governments offer this and it’s one way they’re being more inclusive.
Torres said currently they don’t have a lot of board members with kids, but they hope having this small monthly stipend will encourage more parents to consider being on the school board.
“The stipend really is a modest amount,” Torres said. “It’s about $20 but we wanted it to be a symbol or a signal that helps us provide a more inclusive invitation for anyone who wants to be part of the board of education.”
Currently no board members have requested a monthly stipend, but if they do the money will come out of the district’s $140-million budget.
