DOJ identifies suspect and officers in Eau Claire County officer-involved shooting

Eau Claire County (WQOW) – The Wisconsin Department of Justice has identified the man killed and the officers who shot him in an Eau Claire County shooting last weekend.

According to the DOJ, Tyler Meier of Neillsville was shot and killed by law enforcement after a report of a suspicious person on Kempton Road between Augusta and Fairchild on Saturday.

When authorities arrived, they were confronted by Meier who “was in a state of agitation.” While officers tried to gain control of him, he began to fight with law enforcement.

He was then shot and killed by officers, according to the DOJ.

Augusta Officer Levi Stumo and Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Eaton are now on paid administrative leave. Stumo has been with the August Police Department since October 2018 while Eaton has been with the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office since December 2015.

Meier had not had any serious run-ins with the law since 2009 but is the brother of Seth Meier, the man who destroyed religious symbols inside a Neillsville church last week. A family member told police the two had recently joined a cult.
