Wisconsin Republicans call for criminal justice reform

Eau Claire (WQOW) – Western Wisconsin Republicans called for criminal justice reform during a press conference in Eau Claire on Monday.

The reform would fund more assistant district attorneys and public defenders and increase pay for correctional officers.

Legislators are also hoping to expand programs that help offenders who suffer from alcohol and drug issues and programs that help inmates transition back into society.

“In 2017-2018, 12,620 individuals were released from prison back into our communities,” said Representative Jesse James. “It’s important to give these individuals the tools and skills they need for when they leave prison, come back home and enter our workforce.”

The lawmakers said they hope to work with Governor Evers to turn these initiatives into law.
