Is it too cold outside for your pet?

Chippewa Valley (WQOW)- As it gets colder, remember if you’re chilly, your furry family members may be too.

Kindness Animal Hospital Veterinarian Charles Arntson said when it’s cold outside, your dog should have shorter visits outside, especially if the dog is smaller and has a short coat.

He said little dogs don’t have extra heat to spare.

Arntson said bigger dogs do just fine when it gets cold because they have big coats to keep them warm, but he said if your dog does spend some time outside, it should have protection.

“If an animal is going to sleep outside, they need some shelter,” Artnson said. “The husky might be the exception, but they need something to protect them from the wind and preferably an insulated layer, insulated off the ground.”

Arntson said if you have a small or medium sized dog, dog coats do help keep your pet warm.

He said one thing to watch out for is ice between their toes, and making sure your dog doesn’t step on a sharp piece of ice.

As for cats, he said they’re pretty adaptive and stay active.
