Tools for Schools grant awarded to Altoona School District for care closet

Altoona (WQOW) – This month’s Tools for Schools grant isn’t just benefiting one classroom, it’s going to benefit the entire school district of Altoona.

Every month, WQOW along with Asher Lasting Exteriors and CCF Bank awards an area school with a $500 grant to help in the classroom.

Cheri Bresina, an alternative education teacher at the Altoona School District was awarded this month’s grant. She will use the money to secure funding for the district’s new care closet.

The closet supplies students with things like clothing and hygiene products.

This is the first year of the care closet, which they are launching on Monday.

They have received many donations for the closet, so the main thing the Tools for Schools grant will go to is creating and packing hygiene kits.

“We noticed with our hygiene items we had a hodgepodge of things like shampoos, laundry soap, but nothing that really went together,” Bresina said. “So, we are going to make kits, some for the teenagers which will include shaving cream and razors, and then for the little kids even Band-Aids, lotions, lip balm, things like that.”

Bresina said there are 1,622 students in the district and anywhere from about 32-40 percent of the mare economically disadvantaged.
