Health tips to help students succeed

Eau Claire (WQOW) – Your health at home could impact your success at school.

The Eau Claire City-County Health Department said poor sleeping patterns and eating habits can influence how your child learns. Health officials said most students need between 10 and 11 hours of sleep each night.

Before they go to bed, shut off phones, TVs and tablets, because screens can disrupt sleep. The health department recommends putting electronics away an hour before bed. A better night sleep can also be achieved with a quiet, dark and cooler bedroom.

Another important step that health officials stress can be found at the kitchen table.

“Kids who skip breakfast might have a lowered ability to concentrate in the classroom,” said Susan Krahn, public health nutritionist at the Eau Claire City-County Health Department. “Research has shown that healthy breakfast can boost attention span, concentration and memory. We also know that eating breakfast can reduce irritability and tiredness. Not only with kids, but with parents too.”

Eating isn’t the only way to find success in the classroom. Another way is who you eat with. Krahn said eating at least three meals a week with your family can boost academic performance and self-esteem, and lower rates of depression, obesity, eating disorders and substance abuse.
