Western Wisconsin man charged with killing a wolf

(WQOW) – Charges were filed Friday against a northwestern Wisconsin man accused of illegally killing a wolf.

Alfred Paulson, from rural Spooner, is accused of killing the wolf last December in Burnett County.

According to the charges, he had set up traps in an area where he usually catches fox. A witness saw a wolf, alive, in a leg hold trap.

The wolf was later found dead, hidden under a tree, with apparent gunshot wounds to the head.

Investigators said Paulson lied to them for almost three hours before admitting he shot it.

Paulson is charged with intentionally killing an endangered species.

The misdemeanor charge carries up to nine months in jail and a fine of $2,000-$5,000.

The DNR told News 18 that trappers are required to release animals they are not licensed to take, or contact the DNR for assistance releasing the animal.
