Outlook: A taste of summer on Thursday, then cooler and wet

For Thursday, May 16th

With the help of sunshine, temperatures will make a run at 80 degrees on Thursday afternoon. It will also feel summerlike with more humidity in the air. Enjoy the weather, because it will be cooler and wet in the coming days.

A cold front will push through the region this afternoon, which will open the door to cooler air from the north. Thursday night will be partly cloudy and less humid with lows in the 40s. Isolated showers could form after midnight, but it is more likely our area will remain dry. Cloud cover will increase on Friday with highs in the 60s, and showers will likely form in the late afternoon and evening far ahead of a warm front stretched over Iowa and Illinois.

The showers and warm front will be associated with a strong surface low that will slowly move over the Midwest this weekend. Overall, expect a cloudy sky with widespread rain and isolated, embedded thunderstorms. More than an inch of rain is possible. It will be cool with highs around 50 degrees and lows in the 40s. Typically, highs in mid-May range from 65 to 75 degrees, and lows are around 50 degrees.

Cooler than average conditions will continue most of next week with highs in the upper 50s and 60s. Rain appears likely on Tuesday and part of Wednesday. There are some signs temperatures will be warmer for Memorial Day weekend, but our confidence in verification is low at this time.

Test out your air conditioner today! It is nice to know in advance if you will need to repair a broken unit before the heat of summer.
