Bangor powers its way to WIAA championship over McDonell Catholic Central

UPDATE — It took 81 years to return, but top seeded Bangor’s high-scoring offense powered the Cardinals to a 91-67 win over McDonell Catholic Central for the 2018 WIAA Division 5 state boys basketball championship.

Bangor jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead to start the game and never looked back. They led 44-31 at halftime and continued to pull away in the second half. At one point, they were up 26. 

The Cardinals dominated inside as they did in the semi-final game. The team scored 52 of its points in the paint compared to only 13 for McDonell. 

Bangor also made the most of turnovers by McDonell. The Cardinals scored 23 points in the game.

As a team, they pounded the glass on both ends, out-rebounding McDonell 47-27. 

Caleb Miedema led Bangor with 25 points. Grant Manke had 19, while Drew Johnson added 12. 

Hayden Baughman had 24 for McDonell Catholic Central.

It is the first state title for the boys team, which last made an appearance at the tournament in 1936. They lost in that tournament when they played in Class C.

The Division 5 title matches the one won the week before by the girls team in Green Bay. 


MADISON (WXOW) — It’s championship Saturday at thee 103rd annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Basketball State Tournament March 17, 2018 at the Kohl Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. 

The Division 5 title game features Bangor and McDonell Central Catholic.

Bangor proved why they were the top seed in the WIAA Division 5 tournament with a 73-31 win Friday over Green Bay. N.E.W. Lutheran.

Bangor had little trouble scoring, with three players in double figures. Grant Manke led Bangor with 18 points. Drew Johnson had 17 and Caleb Miedema added 12. 

Points were hard to come by in the other Division 5 semifinal, but McDonell Central Catholic was able to pull away for a 56-46 win over Deerfield to advance to Saturday’s championship.

McDonell Catholic Central was led by Eion Kressin with 16 points and 11 each by Charlie Bleskachek and Cory Hoglund.

Top-seeded Bangor is a state qualifier for the second time in school history. The Cardinals’ only other experience came way back in 1936. They lost in the quarterfinals in Class C that season. This year, they celebrate their advance to the State tournament following a convincing 76-36 win over Southwestern in the La Crosse Logan Sectional final. They are the champions of the Scenic Bluffs Conference this winter.

Third-seeded McDonell Central Catholic will appear at State for the third straight season and for the fourth time overall. The Macks’ won the state championship in 2016 and ended their season in the semifinals in 2012 and again last season. They earned their third straight berth with a 62-48 win over South Shore in the Spooner Sectional final. The Macks finished fourth in the Western Division of the Cloverbelt Conference this season.
