MADISON (WXOW) — Points were hard to come by in this WIAA Division 5 semifinal, but McDonell Central Catholic was able to pull away for a 56-46 win over Deerfield to advance to Saturday’s championship.
McDonell Catholic Central was led by Eion Kressin with 16 points and 11 each by Charlie Bleskachek and Cory Hoglund.
Deerfield, in its first state appearance, got 20 points from Nate Siewert, along with 12 from Noah Gjermo.
Deerfield’s deficit was in the single digits for most of the second half, but they couldn’t make up ground.
McDonell held a slim 28-26 halftime lead on nine points each from Eion Kressin and Cory Hoglund. Hayden Baughman chipped in 6 and Charlie Bleskachek had 4.
Nate Stewart had 12 points in the first half along with 11 from Moah Gjerrmo.
McDonell Catholic Central advances to Saturday’s championship game to face Bangor, which had an easy 73-31 win over Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran in the first semifinal.
MADISON — The 103rd annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Basketball State Tournament will take place Thursday-Saturday, March 15-17, 2018 at the Kohl Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. Second-seeded Deerfield will embark on its first state tournament experience in school history following its 65-42 defeat of Lourdes Academy in the Watertown Sectional final. During the regular season, the Demons tied with Palmyra-Eagle for the championship in the South Division of the Trailways Conference.
Third-seeded McDonell Central Catholic will appear at State for the third straight season and for the fourth time overall. The Macks’ won the state championship in 2016 and ended their season in the semifinals in 2012 and again last season. They earned their third straight berth with a 62-48 win over South Shore in the Spooner Sectional final. The Macks finished fourth in the Western Division of the Cloverbelt Conference this season.
