(WQOW) — Game week has arrived for the UW-Eau Claire football team. The Blugolds will kick off the 2018 season Saturday, in Dubuque, Iowa, against Loras College.
Beyond the challenge of opening up on the road, UWEC has to get ready for an unfamiliar opponent. The Blugolds and Duhawks haven’t played in recent decades, and in fact, Eau Claire hasn’t faced a team from the Iowa Conference since the 1998 NCAA playoffs.
“They’re going to have some things that maybe look a little bit similar to what we saw on some film from last year, but they could be completely new on offense,” says UWEC head coach Dan Larson about Loras, “they will be fairly new on special teams and defense, so it’s going to be more about us, making sure we’re executing our fundamentals, techniques, schemes at the highest level possible, and that’s really where our focus has been.”
Larson says there have been some long days during the weeks of preseason camp, but he likes how hit guys have approached that challenge, and things their energy and effort will pay off.
“Our guys have, each and every day, have come out (with) great energy,” says Larson, “they’re coming into meetings, we’re getting better even when we’re not on the field. Lifting (weights), I think everything has just kind of been done with a little bit different of a mindset, a little bit different of an attitude. You know, that’s made me kind of continue that feeling that we are turning the corner here and we’re becoming a better football program.”
UW-Eau Claire’s game with Loras is set to kick off at 1:00 P.M., Saturday.
