Eau Claire (WQOW) — The Eau Claire Memorial girl’s diving team is sending a trio of divers to the state tournament this weekend in Madison, and they are excited to make a splash.

Gretchen Hanson, Emily Herman, and Karsten finished one, two, three at the Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln Sectional this past weekend, with Hanson winning the championship with a score of 411.80. The junior is making her third appearance at the state tournament, and is excited to see what she can do.

“The key is just being focused and going down their and having fun,” says Hanson. “And now that I have my teammates with me, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Head diving coach Derick Black has been impressed with Hanson’s leadership all season, and is confident in her approach heading into the weekend.

“Gretchen has a good perspective on, yeah it’s one day, it’s one meet, and the other girls are in that same philosophy too,” Black says. “So it’s a good thing to have Gretchen there, with that experience.”

Maybe the more impressive fact with the Old Abe state qualifying divers, is that none of them are seniors yet. Hanson and Cowan are juniors, and Herman is a sophomore, and the three have pushed each other all year to get ready for this moment.”

“We always look up to each other,” says Cowan. “And we always try to do better than each other, so it really pushes us to do our best.”

“We work hard constantly every day in practice, and we do our best,” Herman added. “And then we support each other throughout the meets.”

“It’s like a bond like no other,” Hanson says. “We butt our heads sometimes, but in the end we all end up working out and cheering each other on, and that’s what it should be like at state to.”

The Division One diving competition begins Saturday morning at 10 A.M.

Travel before Thanksgiving looks decent, but afterwards things could get messy.
