Eau Claire (WQOW) — For the UW-Eau Claire volleyball team, their run at a national championship tips off Friday afternoon at 3 P.M. Their very familiar with their opponent in round one, as they’ll match-up with St. Thomas (MN) for the third time this season.
The first meeting between these two teams was back in September, where the Blugolds took the win in four sets. Senior Madelyn Pashibin and sophomore Makenzie Bachman combined for 33 kills to help lead the way. The Tommies though got their revenge more than a month later, where they took UWEC to five sets and closed out the victory. So with these two teams meeting less than two weeks ago, they are very familiar with each other’s style of play.
“If it’s an advantage for us, it’s an advantage for them as well,” says head coach Kim Wudi. “So I think we’re going to take it one point at a time, one set at a time. We split with them in the regular season, so we certainly know how we match up against them.”
The Blugolds last loss before winning the WIAC tournament championship was to St. Thomas, so they are ready for a rubber match.
“We’re excited for that challenge, and excited to see St. Thomas again,” senior defensive specialist Amber Karn says. “It will be a fun match and I know that everyone on the team has the same mentality. So going in, it’s really exciting for us.”
The Blugolds and Tommies will play at Lund Arena in Saint Peter, Minnesota on Friday at 3 P.M.
