Blugolds carry a chip on their shoulders for 2018 season

Eau Claire (WQOW) — The UW-Eau Claire women’s basketball team opens their regular season Saturday afternoon at Northwestern-St. Paul, and are motivated to build off of a 18-win 2017.

The Blugolds return their top four scorers from a season ago, including two-time first team all-conference junior forward Anna Graaskamp. But they also carry a chip on their shoulders after just missing out on a NCAA tournament birth, and are hungry for another chance this season.

“Sitting there and watching all those teams go up on the board, and knowing that you’re not going up on the board, when you play one of the best strength of schedules in the country it’s hard,” says head coach Tonja Englund, who is entering her 19th season with the Blugolds. “It was a hard off-season for us, but I think in that off-season is made us all a little bit stronger, it made us a little more motivated, and it made us a little bit more mature. I think that the group understands this year what they have to do in order to make that run.”

The Blugolds and Northwestern-St. Paul will tip-off Saturday at 6 P.M.

Travel before Thanksgiving looks decent, but afterwards things could get messy.
