Menomonie (WQOW) –– UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire football will take the battle to the turf Saturday night in Menomonie, for another edition of the “War on 94.” This season, both the Blugolds and Blue Devils enter the game 2-1, and are also opening WIAC play.
UW-Stout has won the last three meetings over UW-Eau Claire, Including a 55-7 victory at Carson Park in 2017. Even though the last three games have been decided by three scores or more, the Blue Devils know this isn’t the same Blugold team.
“Eau Claire is much improved from last year, from just on tape,” says UW-Stout head coach Clay Birmingham. “So our kids know that, they see that it’s not the same team. So it’s going to be a mentality where it doesn’t matter the records, who’s on top, who’s down low, when you face a rivalry game.”
Freshman quarterback and former Spring Valley Cardinal Sean Borgerding agrees, and is excited for his first “War on 94.”
“It’s always the number one goal, to just beat Eau Claire,” Borgerding says. “It’s one of the biggest games of the year for not only our team, but for the town and everybody. We’ve got the trophy, try to keep that trophy for another year.”
Borgering and the Blue Devils offense if coming off a 49-point effort over California Lutheran Saturday, and the freshman quarterback threw for 273 yards and four touchdowns.
“Coverages, reading plays, that’s been a big thing that I’ve improved. Understanding what the defense is going to do, film work, you know what’s coming and what to expect, it makes it a lot easier,” says Borgerding. “And then just getting timing with receivers, I think we are starting to gel a lot as a whole offensive unit. Just a lot of practice time together, so it’s just starting to come together.”
Kick-off is set for 6:05 P.M. in Menomonie. The Blue Devils are looking for their fourth straight win over UW-Eau Claire.
