Blugolds ready to take the next step offensively

Eau Claire (WQOW) — The UW-Eau Claire Women’s Soccer team opens its season Friday afternoon at the University of Dubuque. The Blugolds have eight starters back from last season, when they finished 5-11-1 overall.

UWEC was on the wrong end of multiple close games, with eight of those losses coming by one goal. They do return the top three scorers from last season, including first-team all-conference midfielder Emily Sullivan, who led the team with five goals in 2017. As a team, the Blugolds scored 22 goals in 17 games, but they think this year could be much better offensively.

"Having them back is definitely a benefit to our team," says senior midfielder Hannah Jacobson, who finished last year with one goal and four assists. "I believe that a lot of the freshmen and some transfers that came onto our team, are definitely going to help our team score more."

Sean Yengo, who begins his 23rd season as head coach, agrees saying the team focused on key areas this off-season to produce more goals.

"That build-up play is something that we’ve been working on, and getting the ball in dangerous situations that’s how you score goals, "Yengo says. "And you just have to be big in the moment, it takes the pressure off you as a team."

The Blugolds will stay in Dubuque for a Saturday game at Loras. The home opener is September 5th, as they will host Macalester.
