Eau Claire (WQOW) — A late cancellation by the La Crosse American Legion baseball team means that instead of hosting a Friday afternoon doubleheader at Carson Park, the Eau Claire team has a quick practice at Fairfax Field.
Eau Claire is the defending AAA state champion, and is off to a 5-2 start this season after Tuesday’s doubleheader sweep at Altoona. Players say the team is starting to play up to its potential.
"I think we’re getting close to being at the peak of our game," says third baseman/pitcher Ryan Venne, "our guys are coming together as a team more and building that chemistry. So I think that will definitely help us in the long run."
"You could throw any nine guys out there out of the eighteen (on the roster) and we’re going to compete against anybody in the state, says first baseman/outfielder/pitcher Jacob Salonek, "everybody’s good, I think there’s a whole bunch of people going on playing college baseball next year. A couple juniors who will probably play college baseball once they commit somewhere. It’s a really fun team to be on, really special team."
Eau Claire travels to Plover for a pair of games on Saturday. Post 53 will play Green Bay at 1:30 P.M., and will then face the host team at 4:00 P.M.
