Rice Lake boys claim first Team State Championship in school history

La Crosse (WQOW) — The WIAA State Track & Field Championships ended yesterday afternoon, and after coming up short last season, the Rice Lake boys pulled out all the stops to claim the first WIAA State Division 2 Team Championship in school history.

Senior standout Kenneth Bednarek led the way, winning all three of his individual events and setting three state records over both Friday and Saturday sessions. But the Warriors got key points from the Clerveauxes as well. Marquez Clerveaux finished third in the 100 meter dash, and second in the 200 meter dash behind Bednarek, and DeAirus Clerveaux moved up two spots to take third overall in the 300 meter hurdles. Tack on a 6th place finish in the 400 meter relay, and Rice Lake scored 53 total points en route to a total team victory.

"It’s good because we’ve been trying to do this for the past couple years," says junior Marquez Clerveaux, "We finally got it, and it’s been a great season."

"It’s been amazing seeing how they have progressed each year," Bednarek explains, "It might have been the final season for me, and they’ve got one more left, but they stepped up big. They’ll definitely be better next year, and having practiced with them everyday. It’s been fun, and I’m going to miss the guys."

Bednarek finished his high school career with 7 individual State titles. DeAirus and Marquez Clerveaux will both return for their senior seasons next year.
