Banquet honors Blugold Track and Field National Champions

EAU CLAIRE, Wisconsin (WQOW) — The UW-Eau Claire Men’s Indoor Track and Field Team earned their second-straight NCAA Division 3 Championship on Saturday. Tuesday, the University held a reception in honor of the team’s accomplishments.

The Blugolds scored 53 points at the meet, buoyed by a strong performance from Senior Runner Josh Thorson. Thorson won the 5,000 (14:16.46) and 3,000 (8:25.25) meter events, earned 20 of the team’s total points, and was honored as the Outstanding Performer of the Meet.

Senior Nick Petersson (8:27.27) and Sophomore Darin Lau (8:30.16) followed Thorson in the 3,000, taking third and sixth respectively, and all told, the three runners combined for 19 points in that event.

Senior Alex Mess also provided a lift, taking second place in the shot put with a toss of 17.62 meters, and the Blugold Men’s 4×400 meter relay team finished in sixth place.

UW-Eau Claire Head Coach Chip Schneider was ecstatic with the win: "Anytime you win one, I was thrilled. Last year I got done and I’m like, if I never win another one at least I’ll say I’ve won one and now I’ve got two a year later."

"It really felt like this was the year we weren’t supposed to win and we were going to need everybody to do everything they could," senior Josh Thorson reiterates. "So to be able to do the best that I could for the team, get those twenty points that was just the biggest thing for me. It definitely felt great."

The Blugolds have now won every athletic National Championship at least once. This is the second athletic National Championship the Blugolds have won this season, along with the DIII Cross Country National Championship. They have a chance to complete a "Triple Crown" year with a win in the Outdoor Track and Field Championships this Spring.
