NOW IN ITS fifth growing season, the HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Community Garden welcomes green thumbs of all ages to grow a variety of healthy produce that nourishes our community in body and spirit. Located off Scheidler Road near the L.E. Phillips–Libertas Treatment Center in Chippewa Falls, the garden features beehives, apple trees, and 24 plots growing tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, squash, peppers, potatoes, and many other fruits and vegetables. Last year, the garden yielded a record-breaking 2,731 pounds of produce, all of which went to families in need.
A BENEFICIAL BOUNTY
Throughout the summer, volunteer gardeners bring their harvest to the HSHS St. Joseph’s lobby, where Food Services Department staff collect it. Roger Elliott, Volunteer Coordinator for the Community Garden, delivers the produce to several area food pantries, typically within one to two days after picking. In October, volunteer growers and food pantry representatives will gather for a harvest celebration dinner at HSHS St. Joseph’s to conclude the season.
“We’re making a difference in alleviating hunger in the Chippewa Falls area,” Elliott says. “With sponsorship by the Partners of HSHS St. Joseph’s and no appreciable operating expenses, the Community Garden will be a sustainable resource well into the foreseeable future.”
