State Street project running ahead of schedule; one roundabout could open this week

Eau Claire (WQOW) – Construction on one of Eau Claire’s busiest thoroughfares is slated to be completed three weeks ahead of schedule.

In spring, construction crews began drilling away on State Street.

City engineers originally said the road would re-open November 22.

If weather is on their side, construction could wrap up as early as November 1. In fact, the Hamilton Avenue roundabout should be ready by the end of this week.

Some finishing touches, like laying down more asphalt and marking the pavement, still need to be completed for the rest of the project.

City engineer Dave Solberg said after the project is finished, the route will be better not only for motorists but bicyclists and pedestrians as well.

“It was feeling like we were running a marathon with the project,” Solberg said. “It feels good to be at the 26-mile mark and about ready to cross the finish line. So far, the people that have been using two of the roundabouts that have been open for a few weeks seem to like them. The project seems to be turning out as well as we had hoped. The real proof will be in the pudding when we open the entire route.”

Although all of State Street will be open to traffic by November 1, you still might see workers installing lights or replanting grass.
