Eau Claire (WQOW) — The Eau Claire Fire Department held a memorial service Thursday morning to honor firefighters who died serving their communities.
The department read the names of more than 100 men and women from across the country who passed away in the past year. They also rang a bell after each name as a sign of remembrance.
Officials said the firefighters died either in the line of duty, after complications from responding to a call, or by suicide.
The department said that it is important to bring awareness to the sacrifices firefighters make every day.
“Firefighting is, and will always be, a dangerous profession. There is no such thing as truly safe. To believe that, denies the citizens we have sworn an oath to when we rose our hands and said we would do whatever it took to keep them safe, up to and including, sacrificing our own life,” said Taylor Quinnell, a member of the Eau Claire Fire Department Honor Guard.
The family members of Eau Claire firefighters who had passed away in the past were also acknowledged during the ceremony.
