Eau Claire (WQOW) – Latino students at UW-Eau Claire are celebrating their culture for National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage Month, or what the university calls, Latinx Heritage Month, is all about promoting cultural awareness and broadening people’s understanding of Latin America issues.

At campus Monday, Blugolds were decorating the multicultural office with different Latin American flags, including Mexico, Guatemala and Puerto Rico.

University officials say Latinos made huge contributions to America’s history and culture. So, they want to show support for the community on campus.

“It’s all countries that make up Latin America, that make up those roots, those traditions. The Latinx student population is growing vastly on campus and so it is really great to see that recognized through different events,” said Diana Zarate, with the Office of Multicultural Affairs.”

Hispanic Heritage Month started Sunday and runs through October 15.

The Latinx Student Association will host several cultural events open to the public throughout the month.
