Eau Claire (WQOW) – Monday, third graders at Northwoods Elementary in Eau Claire got some experience when it comes to fire safety.

Firefighters at the Eau Claire Fire Department took their safety trailer to school to teach students about fire safety.

Deputy Chief Allyn Bertrang said every year they teach students K-3rd grade about fire safety and prevention.

Bertrang said only 3rd graders get to go through the fire safety trailer which is filled with a water-based fog that mimics smoke.

“They learn how to open windows and get out of different types of windows that they may have in their home. They learn how to crawl if there is smoke. They learn what a smoke alarm system sounds like and they also learn some things about fire safety in a kitchen,” Bertrang said.

Bertrang said from now until October, the fire department will be making its way to all of the elementary schools within the school district to give lessons about fire safety.
