WI Republicans propose banning fetal tissue research

Wisconsin (AP) – State Republicans are renewing an effort to ban research on aborted fetal tissue.

The bill would make it illegal to use fetal tissue for research or any other purpose.

The authors hope the bill would curb abortions and ensure there’s no financial incentive to abortions.

Violating the bill would result in a felony.

However, several similar bills have failed in recent years with opponents in the medical field saying the measure would disrupt lifesaving research on cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and another illnesses..

Even if passed in the Republican-controlled legislature, the measure faces a near-certain veto from Democratic Governor Tony Evers.
