La Crosse County (WQOW) — A Cadott man charged with homicide in a crash that killed a woman in 2017 will spend time behind bars.

A judge found Steven Kasper guilty Wednesday after he pleaded no contest to homicide by negligent driving in La Crosse County court.

On June 19, 2017, Kasper was headed west on Highway 16. The investigation showed Kasper ran a red light and hit a vehicle driven by 66-year-old Rebecca Wilkinson of Black River Falls. She died from injuries in the crash.

When interviewed by investigators, Kasper said he was unfamiliar with the area. He told them he didn’t realize the traffic light was red until he got into the intersection and hit Wilkenson’s vehicle.

Wednesday, La Crosse County Judge Gloria Doyle sentenced Kasper to one year in jail with work release as well as four years of probation. He’ll serve his jail sentence in the Chippewa County jail, according to court records. Kasper is also ordered to undergo any evaluations and treatments his parole officer deems necessary.
