Chippewa Falls (WQOW)- A new initiative for the Chippewa Valley is encouraging you to use solar energy.

You could get a discount if you purchase with the rest of the community.

Tuesday, community members and business owners learned more about “Solarize Eau Claire” at Chippewa Valley Technical College.

Marta Monti, the solar program manager for Midwest Renewable Energy Association said this program is available for people in Eau Claire, Dunn, and Chippewa counties.

Monti said a solar array can cost anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000 depending on the size of your home and how much energy you need.

She said it’ll take residents about six to seven years before they’ll break even on the cost.

“The financial benefits are that you’re generating your own energy, so your monthly energy bill is lower and over the course of years the system pays for itself and then you’re creating energy for free for yourself,” Monti said.

The deadline to sign on is October 31.
