Smokey Bear celebrates 75th birthday

Fall Creek (WQOW) – He has been promoting fire safety for 75 years and Friday is his birthday.

Since 1944, Smokey Bear has been spreading the message, “Only you can prevent forest fires.”

Friday, families celebrated his 75th birthday with singing, cake, coloring and plenty of high-fives at Beaver Creek Reserve.

The U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council created Smokey Bear years ago to draw attention to wildfire prevention.

“What he is really educating people on is making sure they are putting out their campfires, that they’re being safe when they’re camping or when they’re out in the woods so that they don’t cause an unintentional fire,” said Brianne Markin, marketing director at Beaver Creek.

Markin said the Smokey Bear campaign is the longest-running public service advertisement in U.S. history with more than $1.5 billion given in donated media support.
