St. Croix County (WQOW) — A former Glenwood City teacher accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old girl will spend nine years behind bars.

Peter Gaustad, 46, was sentenced Thursday in St. Croix County Court.

According to the criminal complaint, Gaustad shared sexually explicit pictures and messages with the minor from Missouri. Her mother brought their relationship to the attention of police.

Gaustad taught and coached girls basketball and softball in Glenwood City.

In May, Gaustad pleaded guilty to two counts – child exploitation and causing a child to view sexual activity. Five other charges were dismissed as part of the plea deal.

Thursday, he was sentenced to nine years in prison followed by 12 years of extended supervision. He’s also ordered to register as a sex offender for life, cannot have contact with the victim or anyone under 18 without agent approval, and cannot work or volunteer anywhere where females under the age of 18 will be present.
