Your vehicle registration is going to get more expensive Oct. 1

Madison (WQOW) – If you have a Wisconsin license plate on your vehicle, get ready to spend more money next time you renew your registration.

Your run-of-the-mill automobile registration fee will go from $75 to $85 starting on October 1. That is not factoring in wheel taxes in some counties, including Eau Claire.

Trucks weighing 4,500 pounds will increase from $75 to $100.

The fees are part of the state budget passed by lawmakers earlier this year.

Perhaps the biggest price jump is for hybrid vehicles. A $75 annual surcharge will begin on October 1. A hybrid electric vehicle is one that is capable of using both electricity and gasoline, diesel fuel or alternative fuel to propel the vehicle.

New vehicle titles are also making a drastic jump. Effective October 1, the vehicle title fee increases from $69.50 to $164.50. The title fee for a surviving spouse/surviving domestic partner or a low-speed vehicle increases from $62 to $157.
