Chippewa Valley (WQOW) – Besides the physical destruction, health professionals say severe storms can also impact the mental health of those impacted.

The American Psychiatric Association says storms can disrupt and damage lives and livelihoods and cause psychological distress, PTSD or other mental health concerns for those who lived through the storm.

“Any type of major storm could be perceived as being a traumatic event. So, there’s a lot of difficult emotions that people are experiencing,” said Hayley Willetts, a behavioral health nurse at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital.

Willetts said while it might seem impossible to clean up all of the damage, it is important to pick one task to complete at a time.

Other tips include – do what you can to establish a normal routine and surround yourself with family and friends.
