Menomonie man charged for allegedly trying to set up sex with teen

Eau Claire County (WQOW) – A Menomonie man was charged Monday following an undercover investigation by police.

James Vanwinkle faces three felony charges, including attempted 1st degree sexual assault of a child under 13.

According to police, Vanwinkle was messaging with someone he believed was a 12-year-old girl but was actually an undercover officer.

Vanwinkle sent roughly 15 pictures.

He arranged to meet the girl for sex in Eau Claire. Instead, he was arrested by police when he arrived. When interviewed, Vanwinkle confessed to driving to Eau Claire to have sex with a 12-year-old girl. Police found a gun in his vehicle.

If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum penalty of 125 years in prison. He returns to court in August.
