Man accused of killing officer recently released from prison

A man suspected of killing a Racine police officer was released from federal prison four days before the officer was shot while trying to stop a robbery.

Federal Bureau of Prisons records show 26-year-old Dalquavis Ward of Milwaukee had just gotten out of prison on June 13 after serving a sentence for armed robbery.

Officer John Hetland was off-duty when he was fatally shot June 17 when he tried to intervene in an robbery at Teezers Bar and Grill.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports prosecutors Friday charged Ward with first-degree intentional homicide, armed robbery and possessing a gun as a felon.

According to the complaint, Hetland climbed over the bar and fought with Ward before Ward pushed Hetland back and fired a single shot.

Ward was arrested Thursday in Milwaukee

Authorities have now released the name of a man arrested for allegedly shooting and killing an off-duty officer on June 17.

The suspect is Dalquavis T. Ward, 26 of Milwaukee.

Police say he shot and killed Officer John Hetland earlier this month.

Formal charges have not been filed.

According to court records, Ward was charged with disorderly conduct and possession of a firearm by a felon back in 2015. Add another disorderly conduct charge in 2016 and those were Ward’s only charges in Wisconsin.


A person is in custody, now 10 days after John Hetland was shot and killed at a Racine bar.

Investigators have arrested a suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of an off-duty Racine police officer.

Officer John Hetland, 49, was fatally shot June 17 while trying to stop an armed robbery at a bar.

Officers held a press conference in Racine, but did not answer any questions about the investigation or arrest.

The suspect’s name has not yet been released.

“He is wearing Officer Hetland’s handcuffs, and that feels good,” Sheriff David Beth said.

Investigators have not said what charges the suspect faces.

Hetland, a 24-year veteran of the department was laid to rest Wednesday.

Officials say, “The press conference will be in regard to a suspect that is in custody for City of Racine Police Officer Hetland’s murder.”
