One victim identified in fatal Wisconsin fire

PICKEREL, Wis. (WXOW) – The Langlade County Sheriff’s Office says they’ll be using DNA samples to identify the victims of a fatal fire in northern Wisconsin Tuesday.

Sheriff’s investigators are working with the Langlade County Coroner to collect DNA samples to help positively identify five of the victims of the fire in the small community of Pickerel.

The sheriff’s office did identify the sixth, and one of the youngest victims. They confirmed that Zoe M. Munoz Soto, 10 months old, died in the fire.

The other victims are a 34-year-old female, 32-year-old male, a 7-year-old boy, 3-year-old boy, and a 1-year-old girl.

An autopsy is underway in Madison for one of the victims Wednesday afternoon.

All the victims were in the multi-family home when the fire was reported around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Firefighters found the home engulfed in flames when they arrived.

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues. The sheriff’s office said while the cause is undetermined at this time, there is nothing suspicious about the fire.


PICKEREL, Wis. (AP) — State and local investigators are trying to determine the cause of a house fire that killed six people, including four children, in a small northern Wisconsin town.

Authorities say the fire early Tuesday in a multifamily home in the unincorporated community of Pickerel killed a 34-year-old woman, a 32-year-old man, a 10-month-old girl, a 1½-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy.

Langlade County Coroner Larry Shadick says two other people escaped.

Fire officials say the blaze is believed to have started on the lower level and spread upward. Town of Langlade Assistant Fire Chief Don Wineland says the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived about 6:30 a.m. and they weren’t able to enter the house.
