Altoona (WQOW) – Altoona has been named a pit stop for the ‘Great Race Across the Midwest’, and it is only a month away.

Union Pacific Railroad is drumming up early excitement along many of their popular stops as the only operating Big Boy train will make a stop in Altoona on July 23.

It is one of eight Big Boys still in existence (seven don’t move anymore).

They were build by Union Pacific to handle steep terrain along the Transcontinental Railroad.

Other stops include St. Paul, Chicago and Des Moines
