How to keep ticks, mosquitoes away from you this summer

Chippewa Valley (WQOW) – Lurking mosquitoes and ticks can easily get in the way of summer fun, but there are some ways to avoid, and repel, those little pests.

Health officials say mosquitoes are attracted to scents like perfume, hairspray and scented lotions, which is why it’s helpful to avoid those products when spending time in wooded or grassy areas.

Eddie Stefonek, a registered nurse at HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Wound Care Clinic in Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire, suggests avoiding stagnant pools of water, bird baths and fish ponds where mosquitoes lay eggs.

If you do manage to get bit, Stefonek warns of infection, reminding others to keep a close watch on the area.

“Watch for redness, swelling, fevers and especially streaking up the arms or the legs. It can indicate cellulitis which is a pretty serious bacterial infection that can lead to hospitalization,” Stefonek said.

Stefonek said one way to alleviate itching from mosquito bites is by putting cool water on the bite and keeping it moist with lotion.
