Chippewa Falls (WQOW)– Irvine Park Zoo in Chippewa Falls is welcoming a new baby bison to the herd, along with other baby animals throughout the zoo.

Directors of Parks, Recreation and Forestry Dick Hebert said the baby bison was born May 28, but they still don’t know the calve’s gender.

Hebert said the mother is really protective of her baby so they’re giving them space, but once the calf gets closer to the feeding area they hope to figure out the gender and choose a name.

He said two other bison were born at the zoo, but passed away due to birth complications, so they’re really excited this calf is healthy.

“We’re really happy that we have this healthy baby bison, and it’s obviously a big hit here at the park,” Hebert said. “We have other new arrivals. The Watusi are here and they arrived with a baby.”

Last year, the zoo welcomed a female baby bison to the herd.

Hebert said the zoo also welcomed baby Mara’s, and a baby Coatimundi.

If you’re interested in seeing all the new baby animals, the park is open from sun-up to sun-down.

Keep in mind if you’re caught at the park after hours you could get a citation.
