Eau Claire (WQOW) – One of the three ice rinks at Hobbs Ice Arena is under construction.
Hobbs Facility and Program Supervisor Patrick Newkirk said construction began in March on Akervik Rink.
It started out as an outdoor rink until the Hobbs facility was built around it in 1984.
Now they’re re-doing the rink because it doesn’t have sub floor heat and frost could build in the ground under the ice and cause concrete to move around.
They saw that happening a few years ago and started planning the changes.
“Now the ground below the rink floor is being excavated down to a certain level so that the new base of the new rink floor can be built up,” Newkirk said. “When the project is done, the surface of the concrete for the new rink floor is at exactly the right level.”
Newkirk said they hope to have the arena finished by the beginning of September.
He said the project costs $1.3 million
