Eau Claire (WQOW)- The people of Eau Claire’s Eastside Hill Neighborhood are planning to spruce up Boyd Park.

Residents have decided to take matters into their own hands and revitalize the park, because it’s not on the city’s agenda for another seven to eight years, according to Boyd Park Plus Subcommittee Member Chris Buske.

Buske said they want better access to the river, to build a new playground and have a community garden, while still maintaining room for the ice rink in the winter.

He said right now, they’re in the beginning phase and are trying to raise $10,000 so they can get a conceptual plan and they can start applying for grants in the winter.

He hopes making changes to the park will encourage more kids to play outside.

“There’s a lot to learn being out in nature,” Buske said. “It’s kind of a mind, body, spirit things that kids are learning how to maneuver and how to play. They’re interacting with each other. They’re interacting with nature they’re figuring out risks versus rewards, and I think that’s very important to get kids back into nature.”

Buske said they hope to break ground by this time next year.

The committee had a meeting at Spirit Lutheran Thursday night at 6 for the community to express what they would like to see done with the park.
