Cumberland Special Olympics athlete sent off to state

Cumberland (WQOW) – A Cumberland High School junior is headed to state in Special Olympics and he got a sendoff to remember for the rest of his life.

Michael Avery is a Special Olympics basketball player.

A News 18 viewer sent us the videos below and said “[Special Olympic] athletes seldom get the same recognition as their peer athletes do.”

Well, that wasn’t the case Thursday in Cumberland.

Avery’s classmates sent him off with speeches, a special song written just for him, and a send-off tunnel created by his pears.

Avery is a member of the Barron County Special Olympics Panthers team. It’s the first time the team has made it to state.

Good luck to Michael and his teammates!
