Advanced Disposal requests landfill expansion in Town of Seymour

Eau Claire (WQOW) – Area officials have started discussing the possibility of expanding a local landfill.

The Landfill Siting Committee met Friday morning to discuss a recent proposal from Advanced Disposal to expand the 7 Mile Creek Landfill in the Town of Seymour.

Committee officials told News 18 Advanced Disposal typically requests an expansion about every five years. Advanced Disposal argues they’re running into capacity issues at the landfill, so they want to expand and pile higher.

However, there is a process of committee approval before any expansion will occur.

“Potentially some environmental mitigation-type things, whether it’s methane recovery, composting, organic materials or recycling, that might reduce what we’re actually putting into the landfill itself,” said Steve Nick, city attorney. “Those are the types of issues that we can deal with locally, then we negotiate with Advanced Disposal.”

Advanced also needs approval from the DNR before expanding.

Friday’s committee meeting was just one of many, and Nick said it will likely take until 2020 before the expansion will move forward.
