Eau Claire County (WQOW) – An Eau Claire officer said his car was nearly hit by a drunk driver, and now an Altoona man faces charges.

John Ellis is charged with his 7th OWI.

According to the criminal complaint, Ellis ran a stop sign at an intersection in February, barely missing a squad car that had already started its turn.

When he was pulled over, police said Ellis said he was coming from a local bar. When asked how much he had to drink, Ellis said, “A lot.”

He refused a field sobriety test because he claimed he would fail it.

He had a blood draw at a local hospital although the court is waiting on the results.

He returns to court in April.
