Eau Claire (WQOW) – Eau Claire police have a message for everyone – be careful who you hire to remove snow from your roof.
All of the snow has people scrambling to get snow removed before roofs cave in, but police are encouraging you to check who you hire first.
They say someone paid James Dorsey, 33, with Cedar Creek Restorations a $600 deposit with the agreement Dorsey would return to do the job the following day.
Nobody ever showed up and he is not responding to calls.
There was a Facebook page called Cedar Creek Restorations LLC, but that page appears to have been recently removed.
Police say there is probable cause to arrest Dorsey for theft. If you have information about where he is, you are asked to call police at 715-839-4972.
According to court records, Dorsey has many other charges pending in Eau Claire County including retail theft, possession of meth, forgery, carrying a concealed weapon and operating while revoked.
To help avoid fraud in these situations, police recommend:
• Go with a reputable company or contractor that has been recommended to you or checks out from research (better business bureau, google, etc..)
• Don’t pay a substantial deposit up front. Many contractors for residential ice removal are not asking for payment until the work is completed, or are asking for a small deposit once everything is scheduled and ready to go.
• Make sure your contractor has insurance. This can help cover you if something happens when the person is on your roof, property, etc.
