Eau Claire County (WQOW)- Emergency responders are still shocked after the 40-vehicle pile up on 1-94 Sunday near Osseo.
Osseo Firefighter Wesley Whited said there were 20 tow trucks pulling cars out of the ditch.
Whited said about 10 fire and rescue departments were helping clean up the roads and getting people to safety.
He said they had a school bus take 44 people and two dogs to the fire department so they could figure out what to do and where to go.
He said luckily no one died, but at least four cars were totaled.
“I cannot believe we did not have a fatality with the scene, but there were two [close calls] and they were very lucky,” Whited said. “I cannot believe we did not have a fatality on this.”
Whited said they got everything cleaned up Sunday night, and the last person left the fire station at about 8:30 that night.
He said the fire department is hoping to put together a shelter for stranded people, or support training of volunteers to help in similar incidents.
He said at this point it’s just an idea they are exploring.
