Eau Claire (WQOW)- Athletes at UW-Eau Claire are celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day, by giving back to the community.

Leah Barron is part of the UW-Eau Claire AmeriCorps ECLIPSE program, and said she recruited 60 students from the UWEC wrestling and softball teams to spend the day helping out different organizations in Eau Claire.

They met at The Community Table and helped serve lunch.

Barron said some stayed to help clean up, while others made their way to Feed My People Food Bank, Girls on the Run, the humane society and Hope Gospel for more volunteer duties.

Barron said it’s important for the community to give back in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. because Monday is the day of service.

“We always try and make it a day on service rather than a day off,” Barron said. “So you’re taking your day off of work and giving it back to the community, because that was really one of his main messages so we’re just trying to keep that going.”

Barron said it’s good to have a day to reflect on the community as a whole and to give back.
