Eau Claire (WQOW) — The Eau Claire County Highway Department is looking to for a new home.
Right now, the department resides in a space along Spooner Avenue in Altoona. However, Highway Commissioner Jon Johnson told News 18 that space no longer meets the department’s needs. Johnson said there are many structural and code issues, and is only 12 acres, which is less than half the recommended acreage.
The Highway Department conducted a facility needs study which determined repairs on the current space would be too pricey, compared to building new.
A field, just south of the State Patrol headquarters on Highway 53, is where the department is proposing to build their new facility. Johnson said the county board will still need to approve the land purchase before any design work can be done, but he hopes they can break ground by 2021.
